Day of Mindfulness for healthcare and human services professionals

Co-organized by Plum Village Mindfulness Academy and

Centre on Behavioral Health, The University of Hong Kong

“Without recognizing your own presence,

how can you recognize the presence of others?”

Thich Nhat Hanh - The Path of Emancipation

Working in the human service fields can be challenging yet fulfilling. While taking care of others for their physical, emotional and spiritual sufferings, nourishing one’s own mind and heart is important for the helping professionals.

In his 2010 Hong Kong teaching tour, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh (Thay) and the monastics from Plum Village hosted a Day of Mindfulness for over 200 friends from the healthcare and human service fields. Thay’s teaching was well received and inspired the local healthcare community the importance of spiritual practices. Since year 2012, seasonal Day of Mindfulness were held in collaboration with Centre on Behavioral Health, HKU to sustain the practices in a non-seclarian and scientific manner and promote a better understanding of mind-body care.

Dear friends,

You are invited to attend a Day of Mindfulness(DOM) for healthcare and human service professionals, co-organized by HKU Centre on Behavioral Health and Plum Village Mindfulness Academy - Hong Kong. This DOM is part of our Healthy Body, Healthy Mind” Initiative to integrate mindfulness practices to the physical and mental health fields.

The foundations of this initiative are the teachings and practices of Mindfulness based on the Discourse on Full Awareness of Breathing (Anapanasati Sutta) and the Discourse on the Four Establishments of Mindfulness (SatipatthanaSutta), as taught by the Buddha about 2600 years ago. We also studied how the mind works, based on the teachings of Manifestation- Only Psychology, which was systematized in the 4th century by the Indian Buddhist monk and philosopher Vasubandhu of the Yogacara Buddhist School. Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh has used these teachings to form the foundation for meditation practices to help us nourish our body and mind, to develop insight and to help us transform pain and suffering into peace and happiness. Even though the teachings are from Buddhist tradition, the practices are non-sectarian and are open to people of all faith.

For this DOM, we will learn to understand our mind, which is usually called mental formations in Buddhist psychology and as mental or emotional states in Western Psychology. We will learn how to be aware, to concentrate, to calm and to free our mind. Mindful breathing is the key to being aware of our mind because it brings the mind and body back together in the here and now. We can cope with strong emotions better if we are aware of them.

“When his mind is desiring, the practitioner is aware, ‘My mind is desiring.’ When his mind is not desiring, he is aware, ‘My mind is not desiring.’ When his mind is hating something, he is aware, ‘My mind is hating.’ When his mind is not hating, he is aware, ‘My mind is not hating.’ When his mind is in a state of ignorance, he is aware, ‘My mind is in a state of ignorance.’ When his mind is not in a state of ignorance, he is aware, ‘My mind is not in a state of ignorance.’ When his mind is collected, he is aware, ‘My mind is collected.’ When his mind is not collected, he is aware, ‘My mind is not collected.’ When his mind is distracted, he is aware, ‘My mind is distracted.’ When his mind is not distracted, he is aware, ‘My mind is not distracted.' - Discourse on the Four Establishments of MindfulnessIn our daily life, we are controlled mostly by our emotions, feelings, perceptions. We forget our freedom, we are caught up in endless thinking throughout the day and night. For this DOM, we will learn how to live through physical and mental discomforts. It is the time for us to stop reacting but more being with them. We can explore how impermanent they are and we can find our freedom again by practicing the third and fourth foundations ofMindfulness: contemplation of the mind and the object of mind.In the day of mindfulness, we will learn the practice of going back to our breath, anchoring our mind in the in-breath and out-breath. We become calm and clear when the mind and body are together in one place, with the help of our mindful breath. We will practice listening to the bell, walking meditation, eating meditation, exercise meditation (mindful movements), and relaxation meditation (total relaxation) … We practice to stop, to slowdown the thinking in our mind via bodily actions. You can find more information about activities of past days of mindfulness athttp://mindfulnessacademy.org/en/programs/health-care-dom

Peace is every Breath
For this DOM, we will learn how to be a good friend with our own body based on the first foundation of mindfulness, the contemplating the body in the body. The energy of Mindfulness will help us to be mindful of our in-breath and out-breath. Being aware of our breaths is to be aware of our body, which helps us to be aware of our feelings, perceptions, mental formation and consciousness. We can develop specific exercises to get in touch with our feelings, mental formations, and perceptions. Why is this important? Consider someone who suffers from performance anxiety. He can take the medication propanolol or to practice mindful breathing to calm down. However, this only takes care of the symptoms. We need to look deeply into the fear of not being accepted, of not being loved for not having a good performance.   Hence, the need to look into our feelings, perceptions, mental formations and consciousness.

In the day of mindfulness, we will learn the practice of going back to our breath, anchoring our mind `in the in-breath and out-breath.

Dear friends,

You are invited to attend a Day of Mindfulness (DOM) for health care and human service professionals, co-organized by HKU Centre on Behavioral Health and Plum Village Mindfulness Academy - Hong Kong. This DOM is part of our “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind” Initiative to integrate mindfulness practices to the physical and mental health fields.

The foundations of this initiative are the teachings and practices of Mindfulness based on the Discourse on Full Awareness of Breathing (Anapanasati Sutta) and the Disco on the Four Establishments of Mindfulness (Satipatthana Sutta), as taught by the Buddha about 2600 years ago. Even though the teachings are from Buddhist tradition, the practices are non-sectarian and are open to people of all faith.

In this DOM, we will look into how being still could help us heal. Our body has the capacity to heal, when it is given time to stop, to calm and to rest. Stopping, calming and resting begin with mindful breaths, bringing the mind back to the body, dwelling in the present moment so we can be aware of what’s happening in our body, feelings, perceptions, mental formations and consciousness. We will look into the five steps of healing via the art of stopping and looking deeply, as taught by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh: recognition, acceptance, embracing, looking deeply and insight. Stopping gives us the chance to recognize, to accept, to embrace, and to look deeply into our difficulties. Insights arise when we look deeply into our feelings, perceptions, mental formations and see how we our consciousness process them. The insight of “being in the present moment” can help us overcome bad habits like gluing our eyes to the smart phone while riding escalators, which could cause injuries. The insight of impermanence can transform the pain and suffering while coping with the loss of loved ones.

In the day of mindfulness, we will learn the practice of going back to our breath, anchoring our mind in the in-breath and out-breath. We become calm and clear when the mind and body are together in one place, with the help of our mindful breath. We will practice listening to the bell, walking meditation, eating meditation, exercise meditation (mindful movements), and relaxing meditation (total relaxation) … We practice to stop, to slowdown the thinking in our mind via bodily actions. You can find more information about activities of past days of mindfulness at http://mindfulnessacademy.org/en/programs/health-care-dom

Even though the teachings are from Buddhist tradition, the practices are non-sectarian and are open to people of all faith.

NoMud NoLotus

In this DOM, we will look deeply into the role of mindfulness in coping with depression, especially with the feelings of anxiety, helplessness, worthlessness and the "empty" feeling ... that often arise when one is in a depressive mood. How can we lift ourselves out of negative thoughts, cultivate and maintain positive thoughts? Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh offers the following morning verse for happiness “Waking up this morning, I smile. Twenty-four brand new hours are before me. I vow to live fully in each moment and to look at all beings with eyes of compassion."We have unwholesome mental seeds as well as wholesome mental seeds laying deep down in our store consciousness. The thing for us to do is to create conditions for the positive seeds to manifest and stay in our mind-consciousness while not to create conditions for the negative seeds to manifest and stay in our mind-consciousness. We will see how the mindfulness practices of stopping, calming, resting our body and mind, and the process of looking deeply into the inter-being nature of the unwholesomeness and wholesomeness can set us free from the wrong ways of looking at things, which may put us into a depressive mood.

Materials in "No Mud, No Lotus: The Art of Transforming Suffering" (Thich Nhat Hanh, Parallax Press, 2014) and "The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time" (Alex Korb, New Harbinger Publications, 2015) are referred to in the lecture for the DOM. We will see the oneness nature of body and mind, as mental activities affect the body and physiological activities affect the mind.

Maslow PyramidOfNeedsIn this DOM, we will look deeply into the teachings on Three Doors of Liberation: emptiness, signlessness and aimlessness and how we can apply them to cultivate peace and happiness. We will see how to relate these teachings into the physiological, psychological and spiritual aspects of our life. What are the meanings of life? Do they only involve eating, sleeping, working, studying, having a family …? How can we get up fresh and energetic in the morning and have joy in our daily activities. We will also look into some main areas of humanistic psychology, how to look at ourselves holistically and bring the best out of us. Among the topics are Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” Pyramid, the inter-being nature of “responsibility and liberty”, different states of consciousness (as discussed in transpersonal psychology) …..

In the day of mindfulness, we will learn the practice of going back to our breath, anchoring our mind in the in-breath and out-breath. Health Care DOM

Written by

March 10, 2015

In this  DOM, we will have a chance to look deeply into our deepest desires and inspirations. What makes us chasing after the five sensual desires: sex power/wealth, fame, overeating, and oversleeping. Why do we always judge ourselves and dwell in the inferiority, superiority and equality complex? Why we are influenced by the herd mentality? We will examine Freud's three personality systems (Id, Ego, Superego), Carl Jung's collective consciousness and Alfred Adler's concept on inferiority complex. How are these concepts related to the teachings of store consciousness, manas and mind-consciousness in the Manifestation-Only Psychology. Are we forever bounded by our wrong desires, which bring us pain and suffering? We have the unwholesome seeds of self-greed, self-conceit but we also have the wholesome seeds of altruism and sympathy. Can we transform the wrong desires to right desires, which brings us peace and happiness? We will examine these topics via the teachings in the Discourse on Youth and Happiness.

You can find more information about activities of past days of mindfulness at http://pvfhk.org/index.php/en/activities
